Subject: Cattanooga, Sister city to Gangneung S. Korea: please urge Mayor Myeong-Hee Choi to close down all illegal dog farms and slaughterhouses!

Dear Mayor Berke,
City Council members:

I politely urge you to please watch the videos from South Korea’s evil, illegal dog meat industry:

Chattanooga should not be a Sister city to any city that allows dogs and cats to be intentionally tortured and eaten!

Please urge Gangneung Mayor Myeong-Hee Choi to close down all illegal dog farms and slaughterhouses, markets, truckers and restaurants who serve their products!

An online petition calling for your support in ending the horrendous South Korean dog and cat meat cruelty is in progress, please read:

Let me know how you feel about this,
thank you.

Sincerely:

  1. Happy to post the reply of Mayor Berke:
    ---

First I want to thank you for your passionate advocacy for the treatment of animals. I truly believe when citizens raise their voices in unison against cruelty and abuse, real change can occur. And although it was disturbing to watch, I am thankful you sent the video and petition to my office. Cruelty to animals, in any form, should not be tolerated. I am encouraged to see South Korea has laws on the books against it and applaud your efforts to now hold the local governments in South Korea accountable for enforcing those laws.

Sister city partnerships foster people-to-people relationships, where citizens get to know and become friends with the citizens of their sister cities, rather than government-to-government relationships. My office has no communication with the Mayor’s office in Gangneung and I was not aware this was an issue specific to them. After you brought this to my attention, my office has communicated your concerns to the local president of our Sister Cities Association. She relayed to me that while the two cities have been associated since 2003, there has been no designated representative from either city for the past two years and the partnership is considered “dormant” at this time. Once a relationship has been reestablished, your concerns and petition will be shared with the appropriate representative in Gangneung.
Again, thank you for speaking out against cruelty and for your dedication to protecting animals across the world.

    Sincerely,

    Andy

    Mayor Andy Berke

    City of Chattanooga
